Past District 5 Chairman Jean Fryer

Jean was District Chairman in 1968-69 so most probably many members will not recall her, however those who do, will remember her as a lady with a lovely soft Scottish accent and a gentle, if sharp, sense of humour.

She was married to Frank and she told me that when they were courting he used to cycle many miles from his army unit to visit her and then had to cycle all the way back. They married and settled in Knutsford in 1946 where they had two children – Karen and Gareth and where they rebuilt the family business of rose growing. She joined the Knutsford club in 1951 and became President in 1957 and then again to celebrate their 60th. Charter in 1999. She served on the District Executive Committee as International Chairman followed as District Chairman and then as Member of Council.

She served for 40 years on the committee for the local hospital and then as secretary of the Knutsford League of Hospital Friends.

Some members will remember going to Fryers Nurseries to pick up the District coach on our way to Conference at Bournemouth with Jean, Isabel McKnight and Beryl Walton chatting about old times.

In the 80’s Gareth created the ‘Inner Wheel Rose’ which was very popular and here is a photograph of it supplied by Past District Chairman Pat Russell.

Jean was a rose by any other name and will be missed by many members. Sadly, the Inner Wheel Club of Knutsford disbanded a few years ago, but Jean’s name will last for a long time.
